An F 22 Raptor was flown using 50 % conventional petroleum-based JP-8and 50 % biofuel produced from camelina.
Camelina sativa is member of the mustard family and it has high oil and protein content. It contains 35 – 38 % oil and this make camelina suitable for biofuel.
The flight test events was done by members of the 411th Flight Test Squadron at Edward Air Force Base (California) the week of Mar 14, 2011 for the F22 Raptor.
F -22 Raptor weapons system was selected to be the biofuel blend test pathfinder for all US Air Force fighter aircraft. The test was conducted to test biofuel blend fitness for the raptor weapons system.
The test consist of:
- Air Start
- Operability
- Performance at different speeds and altitudes.
The F 22 Raptor manage to perform a super cruise at 40,000 feet and reached 1.5 Mach speed.
The test was a success and another milestone achieved by the Alternative Fuels Certification Division.
This supports the Air Force’s target of acquiring 50 % of the domestic aviation fuel demand in 2016 using alternative fuel blends that the sources are produced from domestic sources that are much more Eco friendly.
